The Basics of Football

Football

Football is a team sport played with a round ball on a field. It involves running, passing and kicking the ball around to try and score goals.

Offense: To be an effective offensive player, you need to be able to run quickly with the ball and make accurate passes. Your ability to execute these skills will determine whether you’ll be successful or not.

Defense: The defensive team tries to stop the offense from moving the ball down the field. To do this, the defense players must tackle the offense’s offensive players.

How a Play Ends: When a player reaches the opponent’s goal line, the play is called a touchdown and the scoring team scores six points. If the ball isn’t caught or if it’s intercepted, a kickoff is awarded to the other team and play begins again at the original end zone.

Rules: The rules of the game of football are set by an official referee. The referee keeps track of time, blows a whistle when a player is tackled and throws a penalty flag if a player breaks the rules.

Offense:

The offense consists of a quarterback and running backs who run with the ball or pass it to another eligible carrier downfield. The quarterback aims to dictate the play, while the running backs help him.

Defending: The defense consists of players who aim to block the opposing teams’ forward progress on running plays and pass plays. The goal of the defense is to prevent the opposing teams from advancing down the field to the other team’s end zone.
