What Are Sports?

Sports

Sports relate to competitive physical activities and games that seek to enhance participants’ health, improve skill or speed, and entertain spectators. They are also a major part of the media industry, generating interest and revenue for sponsors.

Sport definitions vary greatly, but generally include the idea of “playing fair,” or “having a sporting chance”; that is, to have a reasonable opportunity of winning. A sport is usually organized and requires preparation, planning, observation, analysis, flexibility, and a positive attitude.

In some cultures, sports are also used to represent and maintain national identity. They also serve as a means to introduce people to other societies and strengthen cosmopolitanism.
