The History of Football

Football

Originally called soccer, it is now known as football. It is a competitive sport played by two teams on a large rectangular grass field. The goal is to score more goals than your opponent. Various types of goals include the touch down, the pass and the field goal. The game is played by two teams of 11 players. Each team scrimmages an offense and defense.

The first Football association in England was formed in 1863. It established rules for the game such as a standardized ball weight and a line of scrimmage.

In the early days, the game was more violent than modern day football. Players would kick and punch their opponents. In some cases, entire villages would play the game. These games were often very violent and ended with all out brawls.

The football was also introduced to other countries. In the 1700s, kids in China played a game resembling football. In the 1860s, England became the center of the sport. Public schools laid the groundwork for the sport.

The Cambridge Rules were a set of rules devised in Cambridge University in 1848. They included a number of interesting rules. One of them is a false start. This occurs when an offensive player moves out of bounds before the ball is snapped.

The other is a targeting penalty. This is a rule that protects players from head injuries.

The American Football is a combination of rugby and soccer. It is played on a large rectangular grass field.
