The History of Football

Football

Football is a team sport in which teams score points by kicking and running the ball down the field. The goal is to score a touchdown before the other team scores. The game is divided into four quarters, with the first quarter lasting 15 minutes. The second and third quarters have a halftime break. A touchdown is scored when the offensive team crosses the goal line with the ball.

Football is a high-impact sport that can be hard on the joints. It is a good idea to avoid this activity if you suffer from joint problems. If you are in pain or experiencing joint pain, you should consult with your doctor before playing. Alternatively, you can play walking football instead, which counts as aerobic exercise. Football not only enhances cardiovascular health but also improves endurance.

The game has evolved a great deal over the centuries. In England, the nineteenth century saw the rise of professional football. In 1884, the FA banned two teams from playing after they admitted using professional players. Three years later, the Football League was formed. It started with 12 clubs, but soon expanded to include more clubs. The league eventually developed into various divisions and saw British teams dominate for a long time. The game then gained a professional level and began to attract players from across Europe.

Football has continued to grow in popularity. In the twentieth century, the sport was included in the Olympics. Since then, football has featured in each Summer Games. The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) governs the game internationally. The FIFA World Cup is the most important international football competition. Held every four years, the World Cup is watched by millions of people around the world.
